San Antonio posts mixed job picture for January
San Antonio Business Journal - March 8, 2007
San Antonio's job picture dropped 1.4 percent for the month of January,
according to labor market information released Thursday by Alamo WorkSource.
However, for the entire year, total nonagricultural employment in the San
Antonio metropolitan statistical area rose by 3.2 percent.
When comparing available job data between December and January, the San
Antonio area lost 11,300 positions, according to the report. However, many
of those jobs were seasonal.
When comparing January 2007 to January 2006, the city experienced an annual
gain of 25,300 jobs. This demonstrates that, despite seasonal monthly
losses, the San Antonio job market continues to grow, labor market officials
say.
Unemployment in the San Antonio area rose to 4.4 percent in January, up from
3.8 percent in December 2006. The state and national unadjusted unemployment
rates for January were higher at 4.7 percent and 5 percent, respectively.
"For the second consecutive year, San Antonio has posted annual January job
growth above 3 percent," says Aaron Smith, Alamo WorkSource's labor market
analyst. "Couple that rate of employment expansion with the low unemployment
the region has been experiencing, and what we have is a job market that is
providing area residents with extremely good career growth opportunities."
Building continues to grow in San Antonio and that's reflected in the number
of construction-related jobs added in January at 300. The mining sector,
which is related to the building industry because it supplies the aggregate
materials used in new construction, added 100 jobs.
For its own part, the Information sector added 100 jobs during the month.
The remaining industry sectors, however, suffered expected seasonal losses
for the month. The Trade, Transportation, & Utilities sector lost the most
jobs as companies, particularly retailers, trimmed 5,200 jobs from their
payrolls after the holiday shopping season.
The Leisure & Hospitality sector cut 1,700 jobs following the close of the
busy holiday season. Meanwhile, the government sector lost 1,400 jobs and
the Education & Health Services sector reduced staffing by 1,800 jobs as
area public and private schools closed for the holidays.
Alamo WorkSource provides workforce development services for 25,000
businesses and more than 1.5 million residents in San Antonio and 12
counties.
